Strength, power and beauty are things that come to my mind when I see an orca. It doesn’t matter how many times I see one, I will always stop what I’m doing and watch until it disappears beneath the waves. However the thought of them disappearing completely is a tough pill to swallow. Due to the many obstacles that the planet and oceans are now facing, orcas are struggling to survive.
I wanted to make a board that would pay tribute to them. The shape of the board and fin is meant to resemble a breaching orca, coloured jet black. The top of the surfboard represents an ocean full of orca.
Each individual orca was laser-cut out of recycled western red cedar – over 300 pieces in total. It was then pieced together like a puzzle and laminated with fiberglass. All of the cedar used in this project was recycled. This surfboard is hollow, built over ribs and a spine like all of the boards I make. Built to surf.
To pay tribute to the orcas, and help contribute to their conservation, I will be donating a portion of the proceeds from the sale of this board to @salishseasorcas. A portion of the proceeds will also go to @ecologica film project supporting the endangered resident orca whales off the Pacific NorthWest coast of Canada. Check out their page and help support a good cause.
